    Sasabeni - Red and Green Lip Rouge (1880) “At the end of the 18th century, sasabeni, an iridescent greenish rouge, applied mainly to the lower lip, became the vogue and continued to the 19th century.” - the Kodansha Encyclopedia of Japan. Sasabeni (bamboo rouge) was the practice of painting the top lip red (‘beni’ from the safflower) and the bottom lip green (‘sasa’ from the bamboo plant), the mixture of the two colours would cause the lips to shine like an iridescent Jewel Beetle. (source)
