  7. A geisha is born (NHK documentary)

Presents a portrait of Kyoto’s entertainment areas - which can be described as ‘forbidden quarters’, especially to foreigners - and the people who make their living in the area, as seen through the eyes of a British photographer. It projects elements of traditional Kyoto culture that are still alive today, focusing on the ceremony of erikae, an expression used when an Apprentice Geisha entertainer matures into a Geisha

  9. The geiko’s journey (NHK Documentary)

It’s rare for filmmakers to look at geiko outside Kyoto, so this is fascinating. It’s also a really lovely, touching documentary which focuses on the personal stories of the women involved. It follows three geiko at an okiya in Anjo, Aichi Prefecture: the okaasan, Kasumi, who looks after her charges with affection and enthusiasm; cool senior geiko Komako, who has to shed her reserve in order to start her own okiya; and awkward new girl Miho, who begins to blossom under Kasumi and Komako’s care.
